Kurram Prepares TDP Camps Amid Counterterrorism Operation

Share the latest news updates

In anticipation of an upcoming counterterrorism operation, authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lower Kurram tehsil have ordered the establishment of camps for temporarily displaced persons (TDPs). This move follows escalating violence in the region, including recent attacks on aid convoys and food shortages due to road blockades.

Camps Planned for Displaced Families

The Kurram deputy commissioner (DC), Ashfaq Khan, issued a letter on January 17 directing the creation of TDP camps in Thall. These camps will house more than 1,000 families expected to be displaced during the operation. The proposed sites include Government Boys Degree College, Government Technical College, an under-construction Rescue 1122 facility, and a judicial building. Combined, these facilities will provide more than 60 rooms and several large halls for shelter.

Ongoing Violence and Escalation

The region has been plagued by unrest since a November 21 ambush in Bagan that killed 50 people. Decades-old land disputes have fueled clashes that have claimed at least 130 more lives.

In the most recent attack on Thursday, two security officials were martyred, and five others were injured when assailants ambushed a convoy in Bagan. Security forces retaliated, killing six attackers and injuring 10. Out of 35 trucks, only two managed to return to Thall, with over 10 trucks looted and set ablaze.

Protests in Bagan

The ongoing violence has sparked protests in Bagan, with residents demanding compensation for damages and the reconstruction of their town.

Addressing the Crisis

The decision to establish TDP camps underscores the urgent need to address the humanitarian fallout from ongoing violence. While the camps aim to provide immediate relief to displaced families, resolving underlying tribal disputes and ensuring the safe delivery of aid remain critical challenges.

As the region braces for the counterterrorism operation, authorities face mounting pressure to balance security measures with the needs of affected communities. The situation in Lower Kurram highlights the complex interplay of conflict, displacement, and humanitarian crises in conflict-prone areas.
