Gwadar Airport Welcomes First PIA Flight, Marking a New Era for Pakistan

The New Gwadar International Airport officially began operations with the landing of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-503. The flight departed from Karachi at 9:50 AM and touched down at 11:15 AM, carrying 46 passengers. This historic event marks a pivotal step in Pakistan’s efforts to boost regional trade and tourism while connecting the country to global markets.

A Milestone for Gwadar

The inaugural flight was greeted with a water salute as Defence and Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif, along with Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, welcomed the passengers. During his address, Khawaja Asif highlighted the strategic significance of the airport, describing it as a game-changer for Pakistan’s economy. He emphasized its potential to drive economic growth, foster regional tourism, and strengthen international connectivity.

The event also included a ceremony where certificates and shields were presented to those who contributed to the airport’s success.

World-Class Facilities

Constructed with a $230 million grant from China, the New Gwadar International Airport spans 4,300 acres and boasts state-of-the-art features. Its runway, measuring 3.6 kilometers, can accommodate large aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380. The facility also includes advanced air traffic control systems, navigational aids, and enhanced security features, ensuring smooth operations and passenger safety.

The 14,000-square-meter passenger terminal is designed to handle 400,000 travelers annually, with the capacity to expand to 1.6 million. Auxiliary facilities such as a community hospital and utility services further enhance the airport’s infrastructure.

The airport’s development signifies a major step in positioning Gwadar as a hub for international trade and travel. Its strategic location and advanced facilities are expected to connect Pakistan to key global markets.
