The Islamabad High Court (IHC) was informed on Friday that former US President Joe Biden rejected Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s clemency petition. The case, which seeks the release and repatriation of Siddiqui, remains a source of concern in Pakistan.
Court Proceedings Highlight US Response
The IHC hearing, presided over by Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, revealed crucial updates on the matter. The petitioner’s lawyer, Imran Shafiq, disclosed that the US had also dismissed a proposed prisoner exchange between the two countries. This decision further complicates efforts to bring Dr. Siddiqui back to Pakistan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitted a report addressing the court’s inquiries. The report detailed the foreign visits of Pakistan’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister but revealed that Pakistan’s ambassador in the US had not attended any meetings concerning Dr. Siddiqui’s case.
Justice Sardar Ejaz criticized the lack of progress, remarking, “The US is showing us our worth.” He also pointed out the contrast between Biden granting clemency to his son and refusing Siddiqui’s plea, highlighting the perceived inequity.
The court adjourned the hearing for two weeks, leaving the matter unresolved for now.
The Journey of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui to Texas
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case gained international attention in 2003, following the capture of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM), the alleged mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks. Siddiqui, reportedly married to KSM’s nephew, vanished from Karachi with her three children shortly afterward.
In 2008, Siddiqui was apprehended in Afghanistan. Reports claimed she carried sodium cyanide and documents outlining potential attacks on US targets. Allegations of severe mistreatment also surfaced during this period.
Her eldest son was released in Afghanistan, but the whereabouts of her two younger children remain unclear. In 2010, a US court convicted Siddiqui of attempted murder and sentenced her to 86 years in prison. However, no direct charges of terrorism were ever filed against her.

Ongoing Efforts for Clemency
Dr. Siddiqui’s case continues to spark outrage and debate in Pakistan. The latest revelation about the rejection of her clemency plea has reignited concerns about her treatment and Pakistan’s ability to advocate for her release.
The lack of meaningful progress has raised questions about diplomatic efforts and international relations. As the court awaits further deliberations, the fate of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui hangs in the balance, symbolizing broader issues of justice, diplomacy, and human rights.
With the case now adjourned for two weeks, all eyes remain on the IHC to see how the proceedings unfold and whether any resolution is in sight.
