In a major development, Hamas released four female Israeli soldiers as part of a ceasefire agreement, while Israel freed 200 Palestinian prisoners from its jails. This high-stakes exchange, aimed at easing tensions, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict between the two sides.

Hostage and Prisoner Swap

The four Israeli soldiers, identified as Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag, were handed over to Red Cross officials in Palestine Square, Gaza City. Crowds of Palestinians, including masked fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, gathered to witness the historic release. The soldiers, dressed in military uniforms, waved to the crowd as they were freed.

Later, Israel confirmed the return of the soldiers, announcing that they would undergo medical evaluations.  Hamas has confirmed that Yehoud is alive and will be freed next Saturday.

Palestinians Released from Israeli Jails

In exchange, Israel released 200 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom had been serving long or life sentences. The oldest among them is 69, while the youngest is just 15. Of the released group, 70 Palestinians are set to be deported, with Egypt hosting them temporarily before they are sent to Tunisia, Algeria, or Turkey.

Ceasefire Conditions and Humanitarian Impact

As part of the ceasefire deal, Israeli forces will withdraw from the Netzarim Corridor, enabling displaced Palestinians to return to their northern Gaza homes. The Rafah border crossing in southern Gaza will also open for increased humanitarian aid and commercial supplies.

Reports suggest that displaced Palestinians are already gathering near the Wadi Gaza area, preparing to move northward starting Sunday. Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary noted that the prisoner exchange is being viewed by many in Gaza as a turning point in efforts to restore some semblance of normalcy.

Emotional Reactions on Both Sides

In Tel Aviv’s central square, dubbed “Hostages Square,” large screens displayed the faces of the released soldiers. Israeli flags waved in the air, and supporters expressed relief and excitement. “In a heartbeat, their lives have changed for the better,” said Gili Roman, one of the spectators.

The exchange highlights the deeply emotional nature of such negotiations, with both sides seeing this as a moment of progress amidst long-standing tensions. While the road ahead remains uncertain, Saturday’s events bring hope for further dialogue and stability in the region.
