Share the latest news updates

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has highlighted the poor quality of service (QoS) provided by mobile operators in Pakistan. The results of a QoS survey conducted in Q4 2024 reveal substandard performance in network coverage, broadband, voice, and SMS services. Key players like Zong and Jazz showed strength in specific areas, while Telenor consistently underperformed.

Comprehensive QoS Survey

The QoS survey, conducted under the Cellular Mobile Network QoS Regulations 2021, assessed mobile operators across 17 cities. It included approximately 46,000 voice calls, SMS tests, and 330,000 broadband performance samples to evaluate compliance with defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Network Coverage

In terms of network coverage, Ufone emerged as the top performer, followed by Zong, Jazz, and Telenor. Zong demonstrated the highest compliance in 4G/LTE signal strength, with Ufone performing well in various regions. Jazz maintained satisfactory results but lagged behind Zong and Ufone in some metrics. Telenor remained at the bottom, showing significant gaps in network quality.

Broadband Performance

Broadband performance tests revealed Zong as the leader in download and upload speeds. Jazz followed closely, while Ufone secured the third spot. Telenor ranked last, struggling to meet acceptable benchmarks. Web page loading times saw Jazz leading, with Zong taking second place. Ufone and Telenor failed to meet expectations in this category.

Voice Services

The evaluation of voice services included KPIs such as network accessibility, call setup success rate, and call completion rate. Zong and Jazz delivered strong performances in this area, leading the rankings. Ufone showed moderate results, while Telenor lagged in most voice service metrics.

SMS Services

SMS performance saw Zong emerge as the leader, demonstrating reliability and speed in message delivery. Ufone followed, with Telenor taking the third spot. Jazz, despite excelling in other areas, ranked lowest in SMS service performance.

PTA’s Expectations and Monitoring

The PTA emphasized the importance of meeting or exceeding QoS benchmarks. Survey routes were designed to cover areas with the highest population density to ensure a comprehensive evaluation. The authority continues to monitor the performance of cellular mobile operators to ensure compliance and improve the user experience for customers across Pakistan.

A Call for Improvement

The QoS survey results indicate a need for immediate improvements, especially for operators like Telenor, which consistently lag behind. With growing reliance on mobile networks for communication, education, and business, it is crucial for service providers to address these shortcomings. Enhanced performance will not only meet PTA’s benchmarks but also ensure customer satisfaction and better connectivity across the country.
