ISLAMABAD: The United States has temporarily suspended all aid programs to Pakistan, affecting multiple development projects. US officials confirmed the decision, citing a reassessment of foreign assistance policies.
The suspension applies not only to Pakistan but also to other countries, including Ukraine, Taiwan, and Jordan. According to Express News, this directive will last 90 days while programs are reviewed.
Key Projects Impacted
The suspension has disrupted several crucial sectors in Pakistan. Projects under the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation have been paused. Five energy sector initiatives and four economic growth-related programs have also been halted.
In addition, funding for five agricultural development projects has been suspended. Democracy, human rights, and governance programs have faced similar setbacks, with 11 governance-related initiatives impacted.
Education and health sectors have not been spared. Four projects in each sector have had their funding stopped.

Reason Behind the Suspension
The move follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump after taking office for his second term on January 20. The order mandates a 90-day pause on foreign development assistance. It directs federal agencies to review existing programs to align them with US foreign policy.
The order states, “No further United States foreign assistance shall be disbursed in a manner that is not fully aligned with the foreign policy of the President of the United States.”
Following Trump’s directive, the US State Department issued a memo. It announced the suspension of nearly all new foreign aid funding. However, exceptions were made for key allies like Israel and Egypt. Emergency food assistance and related expenses were also exempted.
Future of Aid Programs
US officials clarified that the suspension is temporary. After reassessment, the future of the affected aid programs will be determined.
A State Department statement on Sunday defended the measures. It quoted President Trump saying, “The United States will no longer blindly dole out money with no return for the American people.”
Broader Implications for Pakistan
The suspension of US aid has raised concerns in Pakistan. Several development projects across critical sectors now face uncertainty. The halt comes at a time when Pakistan is already grappling with economic challenges.
While the suspension is temporary, its impact on governance, energy, and social development projects could be significant. Both nations await the outcome of the 90-day review to determine the next steps.
