SpainSat NG I Successfully Launched, Boosting Communications
The SpainSat NG I satellite has been successfully launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, marking a significant milestone for Spain’s space industry. This secure communications satellite will enhance military and governmental communication capabilities for Spain, NATO, the European Commission, and allied nations.
A Major Step for Spain’s Space Sector
The SpainSat NG program, managed by Hisdesat Servicios Estratégicos S.A., includes two satellites, SpainSat NG I and SpainSat NG II. The second satellite is scheduled for launch later in 2025. Thales Alenia Space and Airbus Defence & Space led the development of both satellites, making them the most advanced secure communication systems ever integrated in Spain.
SpainSat NG I will operate in X-band, military Ka-band, and UHF, covering nearly two-thirds of the Earth, from the United States to Singapore.

Advanced Technology and Engineering
Thales Alenia Space played a key role in designing and integrating the Communication Modules for both satellites. The 6-meter-high module, weighing over 2 tons, is equipped with cutting-edge technology that enhances secure space communications. The integration took place in a newly built clean room facility in Tres Cantos, Madrid, inaugurated in 2021, representing a major leap for Spain’s space industry.
The company also developed over 200 advanced electronic and radiofrequency units, including:
- UHF Processor – The core of the UHF-band payload.
- Transparent Digital Processor (DTP) – Interconnects X-band and Ka-band payloads.
- Hilink Unit – Enables fast reconfiguration of communication payloads.
Strengthening Defense and Security
SpainSat NG I will play a critical role in defense and security operations. It will ensure secure command and control for armed forces in remote and conflict areas where traditional communication infrastructure is unavailable. The satellite also enhances governmental communication networks, providing secure links for air, sea, and land-based operations.
The satellite is designed to withstand high-level threats, including interference and nuclear events, ensuring uninterrupted operations even in extreme conditions. It will replace existing Hisdesat satellites, Spainsat and XTAR-EUR, significantly improving flexibility and security with its real-time software-defined payload.
Spain’s Growing Presence in Space
The SpainSat NG program establishes Spain as a key player in space-based secure communications. By partnering with European aerospace leaders, Spain is positioning itself as a major hub for satellite technology and defense communications.
With SpainSat NG I now in orbit and SpainSat NG II set to launch later this year, Spain’s space industry is entering a new era of innovation and strategic importance.
