KMC Declares Free Parking Across Karachi

Share the latest news updates

In a major relief for citizens, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has made its parking sites free of charge. Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced that no parking fees will be collected at KMC-managed locations, ensuring greater convenience for the public. The decision, aimed at easing the financial burden on residents, comes as KMC’s financial position strengthens.

Financial Stability Allows Free Parking

Murtaza Wahab emphasized that KMC no longer relies on parking fees for revenue. With over Rs 2 billion in its accounts and additional funds expected, the city administration can afford to waive parking charges. “KMC does not need Rs 40 to 50 million,” he stated, reinforcing that the priority is public welfare rather than small-scale revenue collection.

Where Will Parking Still Be Charged?

While parking is now free at 46 of Karachi’s 106 major roads, fees will still apply in 25 towns and six cantonment board areas. These zones are not under KMC’s direct control and will continue to enforce parking charges. Wahab reiterated that this initiative reflects KMC’s commitment to prioritizing public convenience while maintaining financial independence.

Dumpers Banned During Daytime to Reduce Accidents

In another effort to improve Karachi’s traffic situation, the Sindh government has imposed a daytime ban on dumpers entering the city. The restriction follows a surge in traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles. Under the new rule, dumpers can only enter Karachi between 11 PM and 6 AM.

Senior officials, including the Karachi Commissioner, Additional IG Karachi, Secretary Transport, and DIG Traffic, participated in the discussion.

Additionally, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has been directed to shift its operations to nighttime within three months. This move aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.

With these new measures, Karachi’s administration is taking significant steps toward better urban management and public convenience.
