What is Cholera?
Bacterial Infection with Deadly Consequences
Cholera is a highly contagious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It attacks the small intestine, leading to severe diarrhea and dehydration. If untreated, it can cause death within hours.
Symptoms and Transmission
Common Symptoms
- Severe diarrhea (often called “rice-water stool”)
- Vomiting
- Dehydration (dry mouth, thirst, low urine output)
- Low blood pressure
- Rapid heart rate
- Sunken eyes
- Muscle cramps
In severe cases, dehydration can lead to shock and organ failure. Without treatment, cholera can be fatal.
Urgent Measures Needed
Health authorities urge residents to follow hygiene measures and drink clean water. Immediate treatment and prevention strategies are critical to stopping the outbreak from spreading further.
