Expert Warns About ‘Vape Tongue’ as UK Moves to Ban Single-Use Vapes

A health expert has warned about a lesser-known side effect of vaping that could affect the tongue. He urged people to reduce their vape usage. This warning comes as the UK government plans to ban single-use vapes in the coming months.

Vapes, also known as e-cigarettes, have gained massive popularity in the UK. They were initially introduced as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. However, they have now become a separate habit, especially among the younger generation.

While vapes do not contain tar and some harmful chemicals found in cigarettes, they still have nicotine. Health experts believe they come with their own risks. To reduce vaping among young people and tackle waste, the government will ban disposable vapes from June 1 this year.

Disposable Vapes Cause Environmental Issues

Although single-use vapes will be banned, rechargeable and refillable vapes will still be legal. Reports from 2022 showed that over 40 tonnes of lithium from disposable vapes were discarded in the UK. Around five million disposable vapes are thrown away every week.

Health Risks Linked to Vaping

Cancer Research UK has listed several health risks of vaping. These include:

  • Throat and mouth irritation
  • Headaches
  • Coughing
  • Nausea

A serious condition called EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury) can also develop. Symptoms of EVALI include shortness of breath, cough, and rapid heartbeat.

Dentist Warns About ‘Vape Tongue’

Dentist Dr. Stewart Beggs highlighted a disturbing condition called “vape tongue.” In a TikTok video, he explained that excessive vaping can lead to a loss of taste. He blamed the rising popularity of flavored disposable vapes for the problem.

“Vape tongue happens when you lose your taste due to excessive vaping,” he said. “These disposable vapes contain ridiculous flavors. People use them excessively, leading to high nicotine intake and dry mouth. This results in a complete loss of taste at times.”

Experts Recommend Reducing Vape Use

Healthline experts confirmed that vape tongue is a growing issue. While there is little scientific research on the condition, many healthcare professionals have issued warnings. They advise users to stop or cut down on vaping if they notice a loss of taste.

Dr. Beggs reassured people that taste returns if vaping is reduced. He recommended:

  • Reducing or stopping vaping
  • Drinking more water to prevent dehydration
  • Brushing teeth and cleaning the tongue regularly

“If you have vape tongue, cut down on vaping. You want to be able to taste your food,” he added.

Government Concerned About Youth Vaping

Minister for Public Health and Prevention, Andrew Gwynne, expressed concerns over rising vape use among children. “It’s deeply worrying that a quarter of 11 to 15-year-olds used a vape last year. Disposable vapes are the preferred choice for most young users,” he said.

He stated that banning single-use vapes will help both the environment and public health. “This will make vapes less appealing to children and protect vulnerable young people,” he added.

People experiencing unusual symptoms linked to vaping, such as EVALI, should consult a doctor immediately.
