The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced the milestone in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). A groundbreaking ceremony was held at PTCL’s landing site at Sea View, Karachi, to commemorate the connection.
The Africa-1 cable will significantly improve internet speed, stability, and data transmission capacity.

PTCL’s Investment and Project Timeline
PTCL’s Board of Directors approved a $59.5 million investment in the Africa-1 project in November 2020. The company started investing in the initiative as part of its capital expenditure (CAPEX) in 2021.
Once operational, it will allow PTCL to generate revenue, contributing to the company’s financial growth.
Boosting Regional and Global Connectivity
Africa-1 is designed to establish high-speed connectivity between the UAE, Europe, and Africa, with multiple landing stations along its route. The cable will serve as a key digital link for Pakistan, providing greater redundancy and improved internet performance.
This development comes at a crucial time when the country faces frequent internet disruptions due to limited bandwidth and infrastructure constraints.
Future of Pakistan’s Internet Infrastructure
In a recent briefing to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on IT and Telecommunication, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (r) Hafeez Ur Rehman revealed that four new submarine cables are in progress to further boost Pakistan’s internet capacity.
