Lyon Manager Paulo Fonseca Handed Nine-Month Ban

Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca suspension has been confirmed by the French Professional Football League (LFP) following a heated confrontation with referee Benoit Millot. The Portuguese coach is banned from matchday duties until November 30 after an altercation during Lyonā€™s 2-1 victory over Brest on March 2.

Severe Restrictions Imposed

The LFP ruling bars Fonseca from the bench, officialsā€™ dressing rooms, and match-related activities before, during, or after games. Additionally, he cannot enter the team dressing room, pitch, tunnel, or corridors leading to these areas until September 15.

The decision follows an incident where Fonseca reacted aggressively after a penalty review for Brest, which was ultimately not awarded. Referee Millot stated that Fonsecaā€™s response was ā€œintimidatingā€ and claimed the Lyon coach attempted a headbutt, making slight contact with his nose.

Lyon Challenges the Decision

Lyon strongly opposed the severity of the punishment, calling it “unprecedented” and arguing that Fonseca was judged harshly. The club is considering an appeal against the decision, believing it was made too swiftly and without due process.

Following the incident, Fonseca apologized, acknowledging his emotional reaction. He had only taken charge of Lyon on January 31 after leaving AC Milan. Despite the controversy, Lyon sits sixth in Ligue 1 and is set to face FCSB in the Europa League on Thursday.

Growing Tensions Between Coaches and Referees

Fonsecaā€™s suspension adds to the escalating tensions between referees and club officials in France. Last week, the French refereesā€™ union threatened match withdrawals if officials or their families continued facing threats.

The issue gained further attention after Marseille president Pablo Longoria received a 15-match ban for calling a refereeā€™s decision in his teamā€™s 3-0 defeat to Auxerre “true corruption.”

Impact on Lyonā€™s Season

Fonsecaā€™s absence on matchdays will be a major challenge for Lyon as they push for European qualification. The club must now rely on assistant coaches to guide the team while Fonseca serves his ban.

As the situation unfolds, Lyonā€™s response and the potential appeal could shape the future of officiating discipline in French football.
