A dengue outbreak may hit parts of Pakistan following recent heavy rains, the National Institute of Health (NIH) has warned. Punjab, Balochistan, and northern regions face a high risk due to the warm and humid conditions that favor mosquito breeding. Authorities and the public have been urged to take immediate preventive measures to control the spread of the virus.
Rising Dengue Cases Spark Concern
The NIH reported a sharp rise in dengue cases last year, with 28,427 infections recorded in 2024, a significant increase from the previous year. If preventive actions are not taken, this number could rise even further in 2025.
Dengue spreads through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water. With post-rainfall conditions ideal for mosquito proliferation, health experts fear an outbreak could emerge in the coming weeks.
Common Symptoms and Risks
Dengue fever can cause severe health complications. Symptoms typically include:
- High fever
- Severe headaches
- Joint and muscle pain
- Skin rashes
- Pain behind the eyes
In severe cases, dengue can lead to internal bleeding and dangerously low platelet counts.

Hospitals across affected regions have been instructed to strengthen laboratory facilities for rapid dengue diagnosis and treatment.

To prevent the spread of dengue fever, the NIH has advised the following precautions:
