Cargo Ship Collides With US Oil Tanker Off UK Coast

Share the latest news updates

A cargo vessel crashed into a US-flagged oil tanker carrying jet fuel off the northeast coast of England on Monday, triggering a huge fire and multiple explosions. The collision prompted an immediate rescue operation, raising concerns over potential environmental hazards.

Emergency teams, including helicopters, lifeboats, and fire-fighting vessels, rushed to the scene. Authorities confirmed that one person sustained injuries while all 36 other crew members from both ships were rescued safely.

Collision Details and Investigation

The Portuguese-flagged container ship, Solong, plowed into the Stena Immaculate, a US military-linked oil tanker, around 10 miles off the English coastline. According to VesselFinder, the collision occurred just before 10 a.m. local time while the tanker was anchored in the North Sea.

Videos from the scene captured thick black smoke rising into the sky as flames engulfed one of the vessels. Crowley, the logistics firm managing the Stena Immaculate, confirmed that multiple explosions erupted following the crash.

The Solong had departed from Grangemouth, Scotland, on Sunday evening and was en route to Rotterdam, Netherlands, when it struck the stationary tanker. Officials have yet to determine the cause of the accident, with many questioning how two technologically advanced ships failed to avoid such a collision.

Martyn Boyers, CEO of Port of Grimsby East, expressed disbelief, emphasizing that modern vessels use sophisticated tracking systems to detect obstacles. He suggested that the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) and the Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) would conduct a thorough probe.

Potential Environmental Risks

Authorities confirmed that the Stena Immaculate sustained a ruptured cargo tank containing Jet-A1 fuel. Environmental groups, including Greenpeace UK, have expressed concern over possible ecological damage but stated it was too early to determine the extent of the impact.

Experts note that jet fuel spills are generally less damaging than crude oil leaks. Unlike crude oil, jet fuel evaporates quickly, allowing bacteria to break it down faster. Dr. Mark Hartl, a marine ecotoxicologist, explained that while the incident looks alarming, the risk to marine ecosystems might be lower than expected.

US Military Connection and Security Implications

The Stena Immaculate is part of a US Department of Defense program ensuring a secure fuel supply for military operations. The Tanker Security Program maintains a fleet of ten commercial vessels designated to transport fuel during emergencies.

Despite the accident, US officials have not reported any threats to military logistics. However, the collision highlights growing concerns over maritime safety, particularly in strategic supply chains.

Response and Ongoing Monitoring

Emergency crews remain on high alert as firefighters work to control the damage. Maritime authorities continue to monitor for potential oil spills, with experts emphasizing rapid response as a key factor in minimizing environmental harm.
