Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has laid the foundation stone of Daanish University, a £190 million (Rs 60 billion) project.
While addressing the groundbreaking ceremony, PM Shehbaz praised Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and former chief justice Qazi Faez Isa for helping transfer £190 million to the national treasury.
The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) had seized this amount from a property tycoon. Later, the Supreme Court redirected the funds to the federal government for the university.
Al-Qadir Trust Scandal and Fund Origins
These funds link to the £190 million case involving PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi. Both received prison sentences for their role in the Al-Qadir Trust scandal.
During Khan’s tenure, the UK’s NCA confiscated the assets. Instead of directing the money to public welfare, the government deposited it into the Supreme Court on behalf of a businessman. Shortly after, the Al-Qadir Trust emerged, allegedly to legalize the funds.
Free Education for Underprivileged Students
PM Shehbaz emphasized that students from all four provinces would access higher education at Daanish University. To ensure equal opportunities, underprivileged students will study for free.
Furthermore, the university aims to become a global institution with top faculty and cutting-edge research centers. Authorities plan to make the first section operational by August 14, 2026.
Strict Merit-Based Admissions
The prime minister confirmed that the university would admit students purely on merit. To ensure financial stability, a trust will manage the institution. Initially, the government will invest Rs10 billion as seed money.
Wealthy students will pay tuition, while deserving students will receive scholarships. Additionally, PM Shehbaz announced that officials had finalized the board of governors. He guaranteed that the government would not interfere in administrative matters, ensuring the university’s autonomy.
Public Money Used for Education
Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal stressed the significance of using public money wisely. He criticized the previous government for failing to allocate the funds properly.
Daanish University will play a crucial role in preparing students for the industrial revolution. The institution will offer specialized programs in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, space sciences, and other emerging technologies.
Global Partnerships and Future Goals
To elevate Pakistan’s education sector, the government will collaborate with international institutions. According to Ahsan Iqbal, these partnerships will help transfer advanced technology to students and researchers.
