UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised alarm over the growing wave of anti-Muslim bigotry, urging governments to uphold religious freedom and calling on online platforms to curb hate speech. He made these remarks on March 15, the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, highlighting increasing discrimination against Muslim communities worldwide.
Growing Discrimination and Intolerance
Guterres warned of racial profiling, discriminatory policies, and outright violence targeting Muslim individuals and places of worship. He described this as part of a broader trend of intolerance, extremism, and attacks on religious groups.
āWe are witnessing a disturbing rise in anti-Muslim bigotry,ā Guterres said in a video message on X. He urged world leaders to promote social harmony and safeguard religious freedoms.
Online Platforms and Hate Speech
The UN chief called on social media platforms to take stronger action against hate speech and harassment. He emphasized that digital spaces should not fuel discrimination or spread extremist ideologies.
UN Under-Secretary-General Miguel Angel Moratinos echoed these concerns. He pointed out that institutional discrimination and socioeconomic restrictions were becoming more prevalent against Muslim communities.

Islamophobia and Global Concerns
Reports indicate a sharp rise in Islamophobia, particularly since Israelās war on Gaza began 17 months ago. Pro-Palestinian activists in Western nations, including the United States, have faced accusations of supporting Hamas simply for advocating Palestinian rights.
Rights groups have also noted an increase in anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and anti-Semitic incidents worldwide. A study by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) found that cases of anti-Muslim and anti-Arab discrimination in the U.S. reached an all-time high in 2023. CAIR recorded 8,658 complaints, marking a 7.4% increase from the previous year.
Similar trends have been observed in the UK, India, and other nations, raising global concerns over rising intolerance and bias against Muslim communities.
The Path Forward
The UN continues to urge governments to take concrete steps against religious discrimination. As anti-Muslim sentiment grows, pressure is mounting on world leaders and tech companies to tackle hate speech, promote inclusivity, and ensure religious freedoms for all.
