ConnectHear Launches AI-Based Disaster Protection for the Deaf Community

Karachi – March 20, 2025 – ConnectHear, a leading assistive technology startup in South Asia, has introduced an AI-driven disaster response system to protect deaf individuals during natural calamities. The initiative was launched at the “Access, Ability, Tech” event in Karachi, aiming to ensure life-saving communication for all. This project is supported by the GSMA Humanitarian Innovation Fund, in partnership with Hands and Ufone 4G.
Bridging the Communication Gap in Emergencies
Pakistan, one of the top ten countries most affected by climate disasters, faces severe challenges in disseminating timely information during crises. The situation is even more critical for over 10 million deaf individuals, who often lack access to emergency alerts.
With its AI-powered sign language interpretation platform, ConnectHear is addressing this issue by ensuring seamless communication in emergencies. This system will provide real-time alerts and accessible information to help deaf individuals respond effectively to disasters.
Keynote Speakers Emphasize Inclusive Disaster Management
The event featured notable speakers who highlighted the importance of inclusive emergency response strategies.
Kamran Akbar, a social development expert and senior official at the World Bank, stressed the need for equitable crisis management. He stated, “Ensuring the safety of every individual in a disaster is not just a necessity but a responsibility. AI-driven solutions can break communication barriers and revolutionize emergency response for the deaf community.”
Brigadier (Retd.) Tariq Qadir Lakher, CEO of SIEHS-1122, emphasized the role of AI in improving emergency response. He remarked, “Innovative AI-powered services make crisis response more inclusive. This initiative guarantees that deaf individuals receive timely life-saving assistance.”

- Early Warning AI (EWAI) – An AI-driven system that delivers automated video alerts in sign language, warning deaf individuals of impending natural disasters.
- Virtual Sign Language Platform – Designed to work efficiently even in low-network areas, ensuring uninterrupted communication during emergencies.
To maximize impact, Ufone 4G will broadcast these AI-generated alerts, while Hands will lead community outreach and training efforts. Additionally, Ufone 4G has waived data charges for the ConnectHear app, allowing free access for users.
Scaling Impact and Future Goals
Initially, this project aims to support 1,000 deaf individuals, with plans to expand through partnerships with more organizations. The goal is to strengthen disaster preparedness and enhance accessibility for Pakistan’s deaf community.
