PIA Ban in the UK Expected to End Soon

Share the latest news updates

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) may soon regain permission to fly to the United Kingdom, as the British Air Safety Committee has completed a key meeting on the issue. The lifting of the five-year ban would be a major breakthrough for the airline, which has suffered significant losses due to restrictions.

Final Decision Expected Soon

Sources indicate that the British Air Safety Committee will inform Pakistanā€™s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of its decision in the coming days. The Pakistani government is optimistic that the ban will be removed following the latest review.

The UK and European aviation authorities imposed the ban in July 2020 after a scandal involving fake pilot licenses came to light. The controversy surfaced when a PIA Airbus A320 crashed in Karachi, killing nearly 100 people. In response, then-Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan claimed that several pilots were flying with fraudulent credentials.

The revelation led to a suspension of PIAā€™s operations in the UK, European Union, and the United States. Since then, Pakistan has worked to regain international confidence by overhauling its aviation regulatory framework and improving safety measures.

Financial Toll on PIA

The flight restrictions dealt a heavy financial blow to the already struggling national carrier. The ban caused an estimated Rs40 billion ($144 million) annual revenue loss, as PIA was forced to halt its most profitable routes.

PIA holds 23% of Pakistanā€™s domestic market, but its 34-plane fleet struggles to compete with Middle Eastern carriers, which dominate 60% of air traffic to and from Pakistan. A lack of direct international flights has further limited PIAā€™s reach, despite agreements with 87 countries and access to key landing slots.

Hope for Resuming UK Operations

In January 2025, PIA took a significant step toward reclaiming its position in Europe by operating its first direct flight from Islamabad to Paris after years of suspension. This move signaled progress in restoring international trust in the airline.

Looking ahead, PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan confirmed that if the UKā€™s Department for Transport (DfT) grants approval, PIA will prioritize flights to London, Manchester, and Birmingham. These routes are in high demand among Pakistani travelers and would significantly boost PIAā€™s revenue.

Path to Recovery

The potential lifting of the UK ban would be a major milestone in PIAā€™s ongoing recovery efforts. Pakistan has taken steps to reform its aviation sector, including improving pilot licensing procedures and ensuring compliance with international safety standards.

If approved, PIAā€™s return to British skies would mark a new chapter for the airline, offering Pakistani travelers direct flight options and restoring a key revenue stream for the struggling carrier.
