Starlink Gets Green Light for Temporary Operations in Pakistan

Share the latest news updates

Pakistan has officially granted Starlink a temporary No Objection Certificate (NOC), allowing the satellite-based internet provider to operate in the country. This marks a significant step toward enhancing digital connectivity, as Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology promises faster and more accessible internet services.

Government Approves Starlink’s Entry

IT Minister Shaza Fatima stated that the move aligns with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision to modernize Pakistan’s internet infrastructure.

“Starlink’s arrival will officially introduce satellite internet services in Pakistan,” Fatima said. She emphasized that this decision is part of a broader digital development strategy to improve nationwide connectivity.

Regulatory Steps and Licensing Process

Starlink, owned by tech billionaire Elon Musk, has been working toward securing approval in Pakistan for months. Musk confirmed in January that an application had been submitted, awaiting the government’s response.

Now that the temporary NOC is in place, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will oversee the completion of licensing requirements, including fee payments and regulatory compliance.

The approval process involved consultations with Pakistan’s Cybercrime Agency, security agencies, PTA, and the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board. The government ensured that all security concerns were addressed before granting Starlink temporary registration.

A Step Toward Digital Growth

Pakistan’s internet connectivity has faced challenges due to infrastructure limitations and slow broadband expansion in remote areas. Starlink’s satellite-based services offer a potential solution by providing high-speed internet without reliance on traditional fiber networks.

The IT minister highlighted that modern solutions like satellite internet will bridge the digital divide and boost economic and educational opportunities across the country. She also stressed that the government’s “whole-of-government” approach aims to accelerate technological advancements in Pakistan.

Next Steps for Starlink in Pakistan

While the temporary approval is a major milestone, Starlink must now fulfill Pakistan’s regulatory requirements before securing full operational status. PTA will oversee the process to ensure compliance with local telecom laws and cybersecurity standards.

If successful, Starlink’s launch could revolutionize internet access in Pakistan, particularly in rural and underserved regions. The service is expected to enhance business operations, education, telemedicine, and digital services, contributing to Pakistan’s broader digital transformation goals.
