An Israeli tank strike on a United Nations (UN) facility in Deir el-Balah, Gaza, killed a Bulgarian UN staff member and injured six others, the UN confirmed. The attack, which occurred on March 19, targeted a clearly marked UN compound, escalating concerns over civilian safety in the region.

UN Blames Israel for Attack

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated on Monday that the strike was a direct result of Israeli fire. This marked the first official acknowledgment by the UN holding Israel responsible. The attack came just a day after Israel broke a ceasefire with Hamas, leading to renewed hostilities in Gaza.

Israel initially denied targeting the UN compound, claiming it was aiming at a Hamas facility. However, the UN has called for a full, independent investigation into the incident.

Escalating Violence and UN Withdrawal

As violence surges, the UN has decided to withdraw around 30% of its international staff from Gaza due to rising security threats. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made the decision, citing the increasing risks for humanitarian workers.

Despite this withdrawal, aid efforts will continue through 13,000 Palestinian UN staff members, many of whom have been working under extremely dangerous conditions. Hundreds of these workers have already lost their lives since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.

Growing Humanitarian Crisis

The ongoing war has resulted in over 50,000 Palestinian deaths and 113,000 injuries, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The worsening situation has raised international concerns about civilian casualties and humanitarian access.

With tensions rising, the UN and humanitarian organizations continue to demand greater protection for aid workers and an immediate end to attacks on civilian infrastructure in Gaza.
