Share the latest news updates

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake has devastated Myanmar and Thailand, causing widespread destruction, collapsing buildings, and leaving hundreds injured or trapped. The disaster has forced Myanmar’s military government to seek international aid, while Thailand declared its capital, Bangkok, a disaster zone.

Casualties and Structural Damage

The powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar, with its epicenter near Mandalay, at a depth of just 10 km. The shallow depth intensified the tremors, toppling buildings and damaging infrastructure across both countries. At least 144 people have died in Myanmar, with over 700 injured, according to state media. In Bangkok, at least eight people lost their lives, mostly at the site of a collapsed high-rise under construction.

Eyewitnesses in Mandalay’s Pyi Gyi Tagon township reported that a construction building collapsed, killing multiple people. Rescue teams are struggling to manage the crisis, as hospitals overflow with injured victims.

Rescue Operations Underway

Emergency teams in Bangkok are racing to rescue dozens trapped under a collapsed 30-floor skyscraper. Thai police are using drones and rescue dogs to locate survivors. The building, which was intended for government offices, crumbled as the tremors shook the city.

In Myanmar, anti-junta militias, known as People’s Defense Forces, have stepped in to provide humanitarian aid. They are delivering assistance in regions where communication remains a major challenge due to internet restrictions imposed by the ruling military junta.

Global Response and Aid Efforts

The World Health Organization (WHO) has activated its emergency response system. It is preparing to send trauma supplies and essential medicines from its logistics hub in Dubai. WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris called the situation a “huge event” and emphasized the urgent need for medical support.

The European Union has also expressed its readiness to assist, while Pope Francis has offered prayers for the victims. The UK government has warned of potential aftershocks and urged British nationals in the region to follow local authorities’ guidance.

Scenes of Devastation

Footage from Myanmar shows collapsed temples, broken bridges, and damaged roads, highlighting the extensive destruction. Survivors in Bangkok described terrifying moments as buildings swayed violently. One witness recalled escaping from the 28th floor of a high-rise, realizing the ground beneath them was no longer stable.

A Long Road to Recovery

With Myanmar’s government seeking international assistance and Thailand scrambling to respond, the recovery process will be long and challenging. Rescue efforts continue as authorities work to assess the full scale of the disaster. The region now faces a critical test in rebuilding shattered communities and providing aid to those affected.
