Dua Lipa Wins Song-Theft Lawsuit Over ‘Levitating’

Pop sensation Dua Lipa has emerged victorious in a copyright lawsuit over her hit song Levitating. The legal battle, which accused her of song theft, has officially ended in her favor. However, the plaintiffs plan to appeal, arguing that courts are failing to protect songwriters’ rights.
Accusations Against ‘Levitating’
The lawsuit was filed by songwriters L. Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer, who claimed that Levitating copied elements from their 1979 track, Wiggle and Giggle All Night. They argued that Lipa’s song bore striking similarities to their work, making it a case of musical plagiarism.
Despite their claims, the court ruled in Lipa’s favor, dismissing the lawsuit. However, the legal team representing the songwriters believes the judgment was flawed and intends to challenge it.

Debate Over Copyright Cases
Attorney Jason Brown, representing the plaintiffs, voiced frustration over how courts handle music copyright cases. He stated that courts focus too much on technical musical analysis, such as notation and bar lines, instead of how audiences perceive music.
“The soul of a song doesn’t live in a court brief,” Brown said. “It lives in the sound, the feel, and the performance.”
He suggested that juries, not judges, should decide whether two songs are strikingly similar. According to him, the current system makes it difficult for songwriters to defend their work when other artists allegedly use their melodies or rhythms.
Lipa’s Legal Victory
For now, Dua Lipa’s legal battle is over, and she continues to dominate the music industry. Levitating, one of the biggest hits of her career, has topped charts worldwide and amassed billions of streams.
While the plaintiffs may pursue an appeal, Lipa’s legal team remains confident in the court’s decision. The case highlights the ongoing debate in the music industry over what constitutes song theft and how copyright laws should evolve to protect both artists and songwriters.
With this legal hurdle behind her, Dua Lipa can now focus on her music, leaving the controversy in the past.
