The World Bank has approved a $300 million concessional loan under the International Development Association (IDA) to support Punjab’s fight against air pollution. However the loan will fund the Punjab Clean Air Program (PCAP), a project aimed at improving air quality and reducing smog across the province.
The Punjab government will use this funding to implement its Smog Mitigation Action Plan (SMAP).
The program will implement several initiatives to control pollution and improve air quality:
Curbing Crop Burning: The government will introduce 5,000 super seeders to reduce crop residue burning, a major contributor to seasonal smog.
Alongside infrastructure improvements, the program will also focus on educating the public about pollution and its health risks. Schools, hospitals, and other vulnerable groups will receive targeted advisories on air pollution’s impact and preventive measures.
Additionally, educational campaigns will promote behavioral changes to encourage sustainable practices among citizens.
