Israel’s History of Broken Promises

Golden Calf to Gaza: Broken Covenants Then and Now

Share the latest news updates

Throughout history, nations have been tested with responsibilities—some divine, some diplomatic. Among these, the story of Bani Israel (Children of Israel) stands as one of the most repeated and cautionary tales in the Holy Qur’an. Known for being recipients of divine blessings and guidance, they were also reprimanded for one recurring sin: breaking their covenants.

Fast forward to modern times, the State of Israel is seen repeating that same pattern—breaking ceasefire agreements and violating peace deals, especially in the context of its decades-long conflict with the Palestinian people and Hamas. The parallel is chilling, not just symbolic.

This blog explores how Israel’s repeated violations of ceasefire deals resemble the ancient covenant-breaking of Bani Israel, drawing connections between scripture, history, and modern geopolitics.

Bani Israel – Chosen but Rebellious

In the Qur’an, Bani Israel is repeatedly mentioned as a nation chosen by Allah, honored above all others at the time:

“O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:47)

They were guided by Prophets like Musa (Moses), Haroon (Aaron), and Dawood (David). They witnessed miracles, from the parting of the Red Sea to the descent of manna and quails. Yet, despite these divine signs, they repeatedly disobeyed the commands of Allah and betrayed the covenants made with Him.

Some notable betrayals include:

  • Worshiping the golden calf despite the clear commandments (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:51).

  • Refusing to enter the Holy Land out of cowardice and arrogance (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:21-26).

  • Killing prophets or rejecting them due to their ego and disobedience (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:87).

Their constant betrayal of promises is mentioned explicitly in the Qur’an:

“But because of their breaking their covenant, We cursed them and made their hearts hard.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:13)

Modern Israel: A Nation Repeating the Same Mistake

The modern State of Israel, established in 1948, has been involved in continuous conflict with the Palestinians. Over the decades, several ceasefire deals and peace agreements have been brokered—many with international mediators like the United Nations, the United States, and Egypt. These include:

  • The Oslo Accords (1993-95) promising Palestinian self-governance.

  • The Gaza ceasefires during major escalations in 2008, 2014, 2021, and 2023.

  • The short-lived humanitarian pauses often broken prematurely by Israel under the pretext of “security threats.”

Each time hope flickered through diplomatic dialogue, it was soon dimmed by sudden Israeli airstrikes, land grabs, or military raids.

In November 2023, during a Qatar-Egypt brokered ceasefire, which included a hostage exchange and humanitarian relief, Israel resumed bombardment within days, citing violations. Independent observers, however, accused Israel of using the ceasefire period to regroup militarily.

This pattern mirrors the betrayal that Bani Israel displayed toward divine covenants: disregard for peace, arrogance in power, and refusal to honor solemn agreements.

Why This Pattern Matters

The Qur’an teaches that the breaking of covenants is not a minor sin—it leads to divine punishment, loss of blessings, and societal decay. For Bani Israel, their repeated betrayal resulted in:

  • Exile and dispersion across lands.

  • Loss of honor and power.

  • Being replaced by others more obedient to divine laws (Surah Muhammad 47:38).

“Do you covet [the hope] that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allah and then distort the Torah after they had understood it while they were knowing?”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:75)

The same can be said about modern Israel’s moral standing in global politics. Once considered a model democracy in the Middle East, it is increasingly seen as an oppressor, violator of human rights, and breaker of international laws.

Global Backlash: A Repeat of Consequences

Just as the Qur’an warns that betrayal brings humiliation and divine wrath, the world today is witnessing growing condemnation of Israel:

  • Global protests in support of Gaza, especially after each ceasefire violation.

  • Countries like South Africa, Turkey, and Brazil openly accusing Israel of war crimes.

  • International court cases and human rights investigations against Israeli actions.

Even Jewish scholars and activists across the world have spoken out, saying, “Not in our name,” acknowledging that justice and peace must be above blind nationalism.

A Moral Reflection

This is not a condemnation of Jews as a people—it’s a critique of a state apparatus and its policies. The Qur’an itself differentiates between the wrongdoers among Bani Israel and those who remained righteous:

“Among the People of the Book is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah… they believe in Allah and the Last Day… and hasten to good deeds.”
(Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:113-114)

In the same way, not all Israelis support war, and not all Jews support injustice. Many are voices of peace, much like the prophets who were silenced in ancient times by corrupt leaders.

The Lessons We Must Learn

History has a way of repeating itself—not because people forget, but because they ignore the lessons of the past. The story of Bani Israel is not just about ancient disobedience—it’s a timeless warning.

When covenants—whether divine or diplomatic—are broken repeatedly, trust dies, innocents suffer, and justice flees.

Modern Israel must reflect: Will it continue to echo the worst chapters of its ancient lineage? Or will it choose the path of peace, honor, and righteousness?

As Muslims, we must also remember this verse:

“And fulfill [every] covenant. Verily! The covenant will be questioned about.”
(Surah Al-Isra 17:34)
