In a move aimed at defusing growing political tension, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have urged authorities to address the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) concerns regarding the canal project dispute through constructive dialogue. The leaders emphasized the need for a fair and constitutional resolution to ensure the equitable distribution of water among provinces.

PML-N Pushes for Negotiation

According to Rana Sanaullah Khan, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Inter-Provincial Coordination, the instruction came after consultations between Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif. He confirmed that the federal government is committed to engaging in talks with the PPP to resolve the issue peacefully.

“The Prime Minister has directed all relevant departments to address PPP’s reservations through dialogue,” Rana said. He stressed that all provinces must receive their fair share of resources, especially water, and added that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stands firm on upholding constitutional provisions.

Legal Framework Offers Guarantees

Rana cited the 1991 Water Accord and the 1992 Indus River System Authority (IRSA) Act as key legal documents ensuring fair water distribution. He assured that these frameworks are sufficient to prevent any province from being disadvantaged.

“There is a constitutional mechanism in place,” he stated. “It guarantees that every province receives its due share without injustice. No government has the right to bypass these agreements.”

Respect for PPP’s Role in Government

Acknowledging the PPP’s role in the federal government, Rana reaffirmed that the coalition is vital to the country’s democratic structure. He encouraged all parties to use responsible language when addressing sensitive matters and reminded officials of their duty to protect national unity.

“We value the PPP’s leadership and its role in strengthening the federation,” he noted. “All constitutional officeholders must exercise caution and engage respectfully.”

Avoiding Political Polarization

In light of recent disagreements between parties, Rana warned against turning water-related concerns into a political battlefield.

He stressed that cooperation among provinces strengthens the entire federation, and urged all stakeholders to prioritize national harmony over partisan gain.

Upholding Democratic Principles

Rana concluded by reaffirming PML-N’s commitment to the constitution, provincial autonomy, and democratic dialogue. He assured the public that the party will not compromise on the rights of any province and called for unity in addressing shared challenges.

“Our stance is clear—we believe in democracy and dialogue,” he said. “Every dispute, including this canal project issue, must be resolved through mutual consultation. That’s how we protect both provincial rights and national integrity.”
