
Water policy reform took center stage as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari agreed to implement a consensus-driven approach to Pakistan’s water and agricultural management. However in a key development, the government declared that no new canal projects will begin without approval from the Council of Common Interests (CCI).
National Unity on Water
The federal leadership emphasized that water is a shared national asset. Any development affecting its distribution must reflect the spirit of national unity.
Provinces to Shape Future Strategy
This committee will include representatives from the federal government and all four provinces. However Its task will be to recommend long-term, practical solutions for managing water resources and supporting agricultural development in a fair and inclusive way.

Dialogue Over Division
During the meeting, both leaders underlined the need to resolve all inter-provincial disputes through peaceful dialogue and mutual respect.
CCI Meeting Set for May 2
A high-stakes meeting of the CCI will take place on May 2, 2025. It is expected to formally approve this consensus-based approach.
