UN Demands Accountability After Israel Admits Strike That Killed UN Staff in Gaza

The United Nations has renewed its call for accountability after Israel admitted its military was behind a deadly strike in Gaza that killed a UN staff member and injured at least five others.
The incident occurred on March 19, when an Israeli shell hit a UN guest house in the Gaza Strip. The location of the facility was reportedly known to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
UN Welcomes Admission but Demands Justice
UN spokesperson StĆ©phane Dujarric addressed the press on Thursday, confirming Israel’s acknowledgment of the incident.
āThe Israeli authorities have communicated to us the conclusions of their investigation, and we welcome it,ā said Dujarric.
However, he quickly added that recognition alone was not enough.
āWhat is clear to us is that we need to have accountability,ā he stated. āNot just for this incidentābut for all instances where UN personnel have been killed or UN infrastructure has been attacked in Gaza.ā
Transparency Improves, But Accountability Missing
Dujarric acknowledged a shift in Israeli behavior, noting improved cooperation and transparency since the start of the military campaign in Gaza. Still, he emphasized that these efforts must be backed by meaningful actions.
āWe know where we stand⦠What we need to see is accountability.ā
UN Calls for Protection of Civilians and Humanitarian Staff
The UN reiterated its demand for full compliance with international humanitarian law. That includes not only protecting civilians but also ensuring the safety of UN and humanitarian workers on the ground.

āWe call on all parties to fully comply with international humanitarian law,ā Dujarric said. āThat includes the protection of civilians, UN staff, and humanitarian personnel.ā
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza Deepens
Alongside the call for justice, Dujarric highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Citing data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), he warned that nearly two months of aid blockade has physically disabled access to essential supplies.
āChildren are going hungry. Patients are going untreated. People are dying,ā he said. āIt is time to lift the restrictions immediately.ā
According to the UN, food prices in Gaza have soared between 29% and 14,100% above pre-ceasefire levels. Staples like meat, dairy, eggs, and fruit are virtually unavailable.
In April alone, prices rose 50% over March, worsening conditions for displaced families.
Shelters Face Total Collapse
Dujarric also reported that warehouses are nearly empty, making it impossible for aid agencies to meet even basic survival needs.
āShelter partners can only provide a fraction of what is needed. Warehouses are almost depleted,ā he said.
UN Stands Firm
The United Nations has made it clear: while it welcomes Israelās acknowledgment, the demand for accountability, justice, and protection of humanitarian workers remains non-negotiable.
