China Denies Trade Talks With U.S. Amid Growing Tensions

Share the latest news updates

The ongoing U.S.-China trade war intensified as China firmly denied any ongoing trade discussions with the United States, despite recent claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The Chinese embassy in Washington reiterated that no consultations or negotiations on tariff issues have taken place.

Beijing Refutes Trump’s Claim

In a recent interview with Time magazine, Trump suggested that Chinese President Xi Jinping had called him, implying the possibility of discussions. However, he did not specify when the alleged call occurred or what was discussed. Trump emphasized that Xi’s outreach “is not a sign of weakness.”

China’s Commerce Ministry had already rejected similar claims earlier in the week. On Saturday, the Chinese embassy reinforced this position through a statement on its official WeChat account. It clearly stated that no dialogue on tariffs was happening and described the U.S. remarks as “misleading.”

China Blames U.S. for Trade War Escalation

The embassy’s statement asserted that the trade war was “initiated by the U.S.” It added that if Washington genuinely wants to resolve trade tensions, it must first correct its mistakes. This would include ending threats and pressures and removing all unilateral tariffs imposed on Chinese goods.

China’s firm stance signals that it will not engage in trade negotiations under external pressure. Beijing demands the complete removal of tariffs before any real dialogue can take place.

Escalating Tariffs and Future Prospects

The world’s two largest economies remain entrenched in a tit-for-tat trade battle. U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods have reached as high as 145% on several products, straining global markets and bilateral relations further.

Meanwhile, Trump hinted that new trade agreements with other global partners might be announced soon. Speaking to Time, he suggested there is a threshold at which China might “feel comfortable,” but warned that the U.S. would not tolerate a situation where China continues to benefit significantly at America’s expense.

No Signs of Immediate Resolution

Despite Trump’s optimism, the absence of official talks suggests that a quick resolution to the U.S.-China trade conflict remains unlikely. With both sides holding firm, the global economy could face continued uncertainty in the months ahead.
