
<>The Sindh government has suspended the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), Ishaque Khuhro, in response to the tragic Lyari building collapse that killed 27 people in Karachi. The five-storey building, already marked unsafe, collapsed in Lea Market last Friday, prompting a 50-hour rescue operation that ended with dozens dead and injured.
Immediate Suspension and Replacement
Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah issued a notification on Monday, suspending Khuhro for “misconduct and inefficiency.” During his suspension, Khuhro will report to the Services and General Administration Department. Shahmir Khan Bhutto, a senior officer from the Chief Minister’s Inspection Team, has been appointed the new SBCA DG.

Government Orders FIR and Inquiry
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered an FIR against those responsible and strict action against negligent officials. Speaking at a press conference alongside Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar and LG Minister Saeed Ghani, Memon emphasized that the administration shared the grief of the victims’ families.
More Officials Face Suspension
In addition to the DG, the SBCA director, deputy director, and inspectors overseeing Lyari were also suspended. The government announced Rs1 million in compensation for each of the deceased victims’ families.
Political Backlash and Public Pressure
Opposition parties, including PTI, MQM-P, and Jamaat-e-Islami, condemned the Sindh government’s failure to act against illegal and unsafe buildings. They called for the registration of manslaughter charges against those involved and demanded urgent relocation and compensation for displaced families.
Dangerous Buildings Under Review
A fact-finding committee led by Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi will submit its report within two days.
