NDMA Issues Nationwide Monsoon Alert, Warns of Rising Flood Threat

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a monsoon alert, warning of possible floods across Pakistan until July 10. The alert follows forecasts of moderate to heavy rainfall fueled by moisture from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, along with a strong westerly wave.

Rivers and Catchment Areas at Risk

According to NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), intense rain is expected in the catchment zones of major rivers. These include areas in North-Eastern and Central Punjab, Lower Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Rivers such as the Indus, Kabul, and Chenab may see rising water levels. Currently, Tarbela, Kalabagh, and Chashma are at low flood levels, but they could increase. The Chenab River at Marala and Qadirabad might also reach flood thresholds. Streams like Swat and Panjkora and tributaries in North-Eastern Punjab could experience localized flooding.

Specific Regional Warnings

Flash floods are likely in River Jhelum and its tributaries in AJK. Streams in Chitral, Hunza, and the Kirthar Range in Southern Balochistan may swell rapidly. Districts including Awaran, Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, Kachi, and Zhob are also on alert due to possible overflow of local streams and nullahs.

Public Safety Advisory

NDMA urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant, especially during intense night-time rainfall. People are advised to avoid low-lying roads, bridges, and causeways. Residents should monitor official updates through mobile alerts and television broadcasts.

Authorities recommend moving livestock and valuables to higher ground and preparing emergency kits with food, water, and essential medicine for at least three days. Urban administrations have been instructed to keep dewatering systems ready.

Coordinated Emergency Measures

NDMA remains in close coordination with provincial and district disaster management bodies. It assured the public of timely alerts and swift responses. Citizens are encouraged to download the NDMA Disaster Alert App and follow all safety advisories closely.
