Trump’s Ceasefire Bid: Can It Halt Israel’s War on Gaza?

As the death toll mounts in Gaza, pressure is building around a potential Gaza ceasefire proposal. US President Donald Trump has stated that Israel has accepted the conditions for a 60-day truce, prompting renewed diplomatic efforts to end the nearly 21-month-long conflict.

Trump Pushes for a Deal

Trump said on Saturday that Hamas had issued a “positive response” to the proposed deal, though it came with amendments. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Hamas’s conditions “unacceptable,” he still dispatched negotiators to Doha, signaling room for dialogue. Trump, aiming to close the deal, is expected to host Netanyahu in Washington on Monday.

“There could be a Gaza deal next week,” Trump told reporters, expressing cautious optimism despite not being fully briefed on Hamas’s counterproposal.

Hamas’s Key Demands

Hamas has reportedly made three major demands in response to the ceasefire plan:

  1. End of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)
The group wants the GHF shut down, citing serious concerns. At least 743 Palestinians were reportedly killed while seeking food aid at GHF sites. Reports, including one from Israeli outlet Haaretz, allege that Israeli forces were ordered to fire at unarmed civilians gathering for food. Humanitarian organizations have long criticized the GHF for serving political purposes rather than addressing genuine aid needs.

  2. (Other demands would be included if provided, but only one is listed in the source)

Mounting Pressure

The humanitarian toll continues to climb. Recent images from Gaza show widespread destruction and grieving families. International calls for a ceasefire have intensified, particularly after reports of civilian deaths linked to aid distribution efforts.

Fragile Talks Ahead

Though distrust remains high, the willingness of both parties to return to the negotiating table in Doha has revived hopes. Trump’s active involvement and Netanyahu’s visit to the US suggest that serious diplomacy is underway — but whether a temporary ceasefire leads to lasting peace remains uncertain
