Karachi experienced light monsoon rains on Sunday morning after several days of humid and cloudy weather. These showers brought slight relief to residents and marked the early signs of an approaching monsoon system. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), more monsoon rains are expected in the city and surrounding regions in the coming days.
Light Rain Across Karachi
Drizzle and light rain were recorded in various neighborhoods including Malir, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shah Faisal Colony, North Karachi, Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, II Chundrigar Road, PIDC, Saddar, and Burns Road. The rain created a refreshing atmosphere across the metropolis, though no major disruption was reported.
The PMD reported the highest rainfall at 2.3 millimeters on University Road. Other areas, such as the airport, PAF Base Faisal, and Gulshan-e-Hadeed, saw 2mm of rainfall. Korangi and Jinnah Terminal recorded 1.4mm, while Keamari and Surjani Town saw only 0.2mm.

Temperature and Weather Forecast
Despite the showers, temperatures in Karachi remained steady. The maximum temperature hovered between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming days, with the possibility of thunderstorms as the weather system intensifies.
Another monsoon spell is expected to approach Sindh later this month. The PMD stated that the rain-bearing system currently lies over southwestern Uttar Pradesh, India, and is slowly making its way toward Rajasthan. If the system continues on this trajectory, it may bring significant rainfall to Karachi and other parts of Sindh.
Emergency Measures Activated
In anticipation of the approaching rains, the Sindh government has taken preemptive action. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that local government staff holidays had been canceled. Emergency response teams were activated to ensure rapid drainage in flood-prone areas.
Authorities aim to prevent the kind of urban flooding seen in previous years. The minister said that all preparations are in place, including clearing of drainage lines and setting up emergency control rooms.
Possible Impact of Incoming System
Weather analysts are closely monitoring the monsoon system’s movement. If it gains strength and shifts further west, it could deliver heavy rainfall across various districts in Sindh. While moderate rain is expected in Karachi for now, meteorologists warn that the situation could change rapidly depending on the system’s behavior.
This kind of early warning and monitoring plays a crucial role in managing urban infrastructure and minimizing casualties and damage.
Nationwide Toll from Monsoon Rains
While Karachi has so far been spared from serious incidents, the broader picture across Pakistan is alarming. According to data from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), monsoon rains have claimed at least 202 lives across the country. Among the deceased are 96 children, highlighting the tragedy’s severe toll on vulnerable communities.
Punjab has reported the highest number of deaths at 123. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 40, Sindh 21, Balochistan 16, while Islamabad and Azad Jammu and Kashmir each reported one fatality.
Causes of Casualties and Injuries
Most deaths occurred due to structural failures and natural hazards. At least 118 people died after their homes collapsed. Flash floods killed 30 individuals. Other reported causes include drowning, electrocution, landslides, and lightning strikes.
The monsoon-related disasters have also injured over 560 people nationwide, including 182 children. These injuries often result from unsafe housing, poor drainage, and lack of early warnings.
Karachi on Alert
As Karachi braces for the next wave of monsoon rains, authorities continue to urge residents to stay cautious. Urban flooding, power outages, and traffic congestion remain major risks when rain intensifies. People are advised to avoid low-lying areas and keep emergency supplies ready.
With the city already receiving light showers, the coming days will be critical. The preparedness of both government institutions and citizens will determine how well Karachi weathers the upcoming monsoon season.
