The Lahore anti-terrorism court (ATC) has sent former prime minister Imran Khan’s nephew, Sher Shah Khan, on a 14-day judicial remand, rejecting the police request for an extended physical remand. The decision came during Thursday’s proceedings, where the court observed that investigators already had sufficient time to pursue the case.

Court Rejects Request for Extension

The hearing was presided over at the Lahore ATC. Investigation Officer (IO) Muhammad Ashraf Javed requested the court to extend Shah’s physical remand by 30 days. He argued that investigators still needed to recover Shah’s mobile phone, a mask allegedly used at the time of the incident, and further details of his social media accounts.

The IO informed the court that a photogrammetry test had been conducted and that a wooden stick had been recovered from Shah’s possession. However, the court dismissed the request, ruling that further custody was unnecessary.

Court Observations

The judge noted that the authorities had already conducted enough investigation. The court emphasized that tracing social media activity does not require continued custody in today’s age of technology and advanced digital tools. The ruling pointed out that digital platforms can be accessed without physically detaining an individual for extended periods.

Consequently, the court transferred Shah from physical to judicial remand for 14 days. The IO was directed to submit the challan within the stipulated timeframe. The next hearing was scheduled for September 11, 2025.

Legal Representation

Shah appeared in court with a team of lawyers, including Rana Mudassar Umer, Salman Akram Raja, and Taimoor. They opposed the police request for extended remand, arguing that the case did not justify prolonged custody.

On the other side, Deputy Prosecutor General Imtiaz Ahmad Sipra and DSP Legal Investigation Dr. Javed Asif represented the prosecution. Both sides presented their arguments before the court before the judge issued the ruling.

Link to May 9 Riots

Shah’s arrest is tied to the May 9 riots that erupted across Pakistan following Imran Khan’s arrest earlier that year. The protests led to violent clashes, damage to public property, and multiple cases against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and leaders.

Authorities accused Shah of involvement in the unrest, linking him to the use of a mask and other materials during the incidents. Investigators argued that his social media presence needed to be examined for connections to the planning or coordination of the protests.

Family Background

Sher Shah is the son of Aleema Khan, Imran Khan’s sister. His detention has drawn strong reactions from PTI supporters, who see it as part of a wider crackdown against the former ruling party’s leadership and their families.

His arrest came just a day after his elder brother, Shahrez, was also taken into custody by Punjab Police. Unlike Sher Shah, Shahrez was handed over to the police for an eight-day physical remand.

Circumstances of Arrest

Reports circulated soon after Sher Shah’s arrest, particularly from PTI workers and leaders, that unidentified men stormed his Lahore residence. Witnesses alleged that household staff were assaulted and family members harassed before Shah was taken away. He was later produced in court on August 22, following these reports.

These claims added to the controversy surrounding his detention, as supporters argued that due legal process had not been followed. Police, however, maintained that the arrest was carried out as part of an ongoing investigation into the May 9 incidents.

Political Reactions

The PTI has strongly criticized the treatment of Sher Shah and other family members of Imran Khan. Party leaders accused authorities of using intimidation tactics and targeting families to weaken the political movement.

Lawyers representing Shah argued in court that the evidence presented by investigators did not justify extended remand. They emphasized that the alleged recovery of a wooden stick was insufficient grounds for prolonged detention, and that digital data could be retrieved without further custody.

Broader Context of Crackdown

Sher Shah’s case reflects the broader crackdown against PTI leaders and workers since the May 9 events. Hundreds of party members have been detained under charges related to rioting, vandalism, and terrorism.

Courts across the country have faced repeated petitions from PTI-affiliated individuals, challenging the legality of arrests and the length of remands. In many cases, judges have curtailed physical remands, directing authorities to move suspects to judicial custody instead.

The Lahore ATC ruling in Sher Shah’s case underscores this trend. Courts appear increasingly reluctant to grant lengthy physical remands unless investigators provide concrete justifications.

Next Steps

Shah is scheduled to reappear before the Lahore ATC on September 11. By then, the investigation team must file its challan, outlining the evidence and charges to proceed with the trial.

The outcome of the next hearing will determine whether the case advances to formal trial or whether further objections are raised by the defense.

For now, the judicial remand marks another chapter in the ongoing political and legal turmoil surrounding Imran Khan, his family, and his party.
