Prosecutors in Utah County alleged that Tyler Robinson, age 22, communicated his intentions and actions regarding the killing of Charlie Kirk via texts and a written note. The texts, revealed in a charging document unsealed on September 16, show Robinson in contact with his roommate and romantic partner—who is transitioning—after the shooting at Utah Valley University in Orem.
On the day of the shooting, Robinson allegedly texted the roommate: “look under my keyboard.” Under the keyboard, the roommate found a note reading: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
When the roommate asked if Robinson was serious, he allegedly confirmed. He also allegedly wrote: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”
Planning and Weapon Retrieval Concerns
Prosecutors allege that Robinson had planned the attack for more than a week, once he knew Kirk would be speaking at UVU. He allegedly wrote that he intended to retrieve a bolt-action rifle—originally gifted by his grandfather—that he had dropped in a wooded area, wrapped in a towel. Robinson expressed concern about leaving evidence behind. He allegedly said he changed outfits, worried about fingerprints, and feared his father’s reaction. He told the roommate: “I’m worried what my old man would do if I didn’t bring back grandpa’s rifle.”
Confession and Attempts to Hide Evidence
In the text exchange, when asked by the roommate: “You weren’t the one who did it, right?”, Robinson allegedly responded: “I am, I’m sorry.”
He also allegedly instructed the roommate to delete the texts, stay silent to law enforcement, and avoid media exposure. These actions form the basis of witness tampering and obstruction of justice charges.

Physical evidence includes the rifle found wrapped in a towel near the campus, as well as matching bullet casings etched with messages. Authorities found DNA consistent with Robinson’s on several components of the weapon and ammunition.
The motive, according to the prosecutors, stems from Robinson’s belief that Charlie Kirk was “spreading hate,” especially regarding conservative and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric. Robinson allegedly became politically active in support of LGBTQ+ rights, diverging from his family’s conservative views.
Surrender and Court Appearance
Robinson surrendered to authorities on September 12 after surveillance images matched his appearance. His mother recognized him in released photos and his father also identified the rifle as one previously given to Robinson. A family friend, who is a retired deputy sheriff, helped convince him to turn himself in.
He made his first court appearance virtually, where prosecutors presented the charges and announced their intent to seek the death penalty. A judge has since scheduled further hearings, including one on September 29

I sure would like to see some video footage of Tyler Robinson running across the roof with a rifle, clearly visible in his hand.
I’ve yet to see that. pic.twitter.com/gNSAH3tJYt
