Former president and retired general Pervez Musharraf died on Sunday after a long fight with the rare disease amyloidosis. He was 79.
The information was confirmed by Shazia Siraj, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s consulate in Dubai and embassy in Abu Dhabi. She told Reuters, “I can confirm that he passed away this morning.”
A senior security official previously stated that the four-star general passed away in a hospital in Dubai on Sunday morning.
“I can confirm that the late general passed away this morning in Dubai… He is no longer alive,” the official, who requested anonymity, told AFP.
Separately, Geo TV reported that on Monday, a special flight to Dubai will transport Musharraf’s body back to Pakistan for burial.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement immediately following Musharraf’s death in which Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad and all service chiefs expressed their deepest condolences.

“May Allah bless the soul of the deceased and give strength to the bereaved family,” the military’s media arm said.
Through a series of tweets, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani expressed his deepest condolences to the deceased former president’s family.
“May God grant the deceased a high position and grant the family patience,” he added.
Former information minister and PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry described Musharraf as a “great person” whose ideology was to always put Pakistan first.

In June of last year, the former military ruler was hospitalised for three weeks. “Experiencing a difficult phase in which recovery is impossible and organs are failing. “Pray for ease in his daily life,” his family said via Musharraf’s official Twitter account at the time.
The family issued the statement after the news of his death began to circulate on social media following its publication in Pakistani and Indian publications.
The retired general was diagnosed with the rare disease amyloidosis in 2018, when the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) made the announcement.
Amyloidosis refers to a group of rare, life-threatening conditions caused by the accumulation of amyloid, an abnormal protein, in organs and tissues throughout the body. The accumulation of amyloid proteins (deposits) can hinder the proper functioning of organs and tissues.
Overseas President of the party Afzaal Siddiqui stated that Musharraf’s condition “weakened his nervous system.” At the time, he was receiving medical care in London.
Musharraf was indicted on March 30, 2014 for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007.
On the 17th of December, 2019, a special court sentenced Musharraf to death for high treason.
The former military ruler left Pakistan for medical treatment in Dubai in March 2016 and has not returned since.
