WhatsApp Introduces Message Editing Feature, Giving Users More Control Over Chats

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has announced the long-awaited addition of a new feature: message editing. Starting this week, users will have the ability to edit their sent messages within a 15-minute window. The edited messages will appear in the chat with an “edited” label, without displaying the edit history.

In a statement, WhatsApp expressed their excitement about providing users with more control over their conversations, stating, “Whether it’s fixing a simple typo or adding important information to a message, we are thrilled to bring you this enhanced functionality.”

This move by WhatsApp follows a similar update made by Apple’s iMessage last year, which allowed users to make edits up to five times within a 15-minute timeframe after sending. However, unlike iMessage, WhatsApp will only permit one revision, as indicated in a video posted on the company’s Twitter account.

To access the editing feature, WhatsApp users can long-press on a specific message. The rollout of this feature has already begun globally and will become available to the platform’s massive user base of over 2 billion individuals over the next few weeks, according to the company.

In recent years, WhatsApp has introduced various privacy and commerce features to enhance user experience and compete with rivals such as Signal. One notable addition was the introduction of an “offline” mode in August, enabling users to read messages without revealing their online status to others.

With the introduction of the message editing feature, WhatsApp aims to provide users with a more flexible and convenient messaging experience, further solidifying its position as a leading messaging platform in the market.
