5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Pakistan, Tremors Felt Widely

The earthquake's epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan on Thursday, predominantly affecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The tremor occurred at 10:56 am Pakistan time (5:56 am UTC), as reported by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, with a depth of 215 kilometers. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) identified the epicenter as being 28 kilometers west-southwest of Ishkashim, Afghanistan.

The quake’s effects were felt across several cities in KP, including Mardan, Malakand, Hangu, Buner, Shangla, Dir, and Charsadda. Additionally, tremors reached Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, according to reports.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported at this time. In KP’s Shangla district, Rescue 1122 personnel were placed on high alert following the quake. The control room in Shangla confirmed that no emergency calls had been made.

In Punjab, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that the quake was felt in cities such as Lahore, Multan, Islamabad, Gujranwala, and Sargodha. The PDMA indicated that there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The authority also stated that the Punjab administration is actively inspecting buildings for any possible damage and has put staff and machinery on alert to handle any aftershocks.

The earthquake has prompted a heightened state of readiness among emergency services across affected regions, but no significant damage or loss of life has been reported thus far.
