Apple Unveils AI-Powered iPhone 16 and Upgraded Siri

Apple Intelligence will enhance Siri and improve features like object recognition through the iPhone's camera.

Apple unveiled its long-awaited AI-powered iPhone 16 on Monday, alongside improvements to its Siri personal assistant, as the tech giant continues its push into artificial intelligence. The company announced that test versions of its AI software, Apple Intelligence, will roll out next month, with localized versions following in 2024.

“This marks the beginning of an exciting new era,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook during the launch event.

Apple shares closed relatively unchanged at $220.91, while the unveiling came just hours before China’s Huawei launched its tri-fold phone, showcasing the growing competition Apple faces in the global market. Despite AI advancements, Apple has yet to announce an AI partner in China.

Apple Intelligence will enhance Siri and improve features like object recognition through the iPhone’s camera. A U.S. English test version is set for release next month, with additional languages rolling out next year.

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will maintain their previous pricing and feature new chips, aluminum casing, and a customizable button. The high-end iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models, made from titanium, will offer advanced AI capabilities, including suggestions for photo shoots and professional-level audio editing.

Analysts noted the potential delays in AI features could keep some consumers on the fence, but upgrades are still expected to drive interest.

Apple also introduced new health-focused Watches and AirPods, featuring hearing aid-like capabilities, further diversifying its product offerings.

As Apple competes with rivals like Google and Huawei, the inclusion of AI in its new product line marks a significant shift in the company’s strategy, especially as iPhones accounted for over half of Apple’s $383 billion in sales last year.
