NEW DELHI: Former Chief Minister of India-held Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, is set to take the helm again. His party, the National Conference (NC), won almost half of the total seats in the recently held state elections. This victory marks a significant moment for the region, as it is the first state election since 2014.

National Conference Triumphs

The National Conference secured 42 out of the 90 seats. Additionally, its ally, the Indian National Congress, contributed eight more seats, bringing the alliance’s total to 50 in the union territory. This outcome comes as Jammu and Kashmir awaits the status of a state assembly, a promise made by the Modi government. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 29 seats in held Kashmir, achieving its best-ever performance in the region.

Congress Faces Setback

In contrast, Congress faced a bitter setback. The party experienced a shocking defeat at the hands of the BJP in Haryana. While exit polls had predicted victories for Congress in both states, the results tell a different story. The BJP claimed 48 seats in the 90-member Haryana assembly, leaving Congress trailing with only 36 seats.

Allegations of Manipulation

This unexpected outcome has raised questions within Congress. The party’s general secretary, Jairam Ramesh, accused the BJP of manipulating the election results in Haryana. He alleged that tampered electronic voting machines (EVMs) and a biased election commission led to this “rigged” outcome. Ramesh described the Haryana results as “a victory of manipulations” and claimed they subverted the will of the people.

He further asserted that serious issues arose during the counting process and the functioning of EVMs in around 14 constituencies. Ramesh indicated that Congress would soon address these concerns with the Election Commission. He stated, “The results in Haryana are totally unexpected and surprising. They go against the ground reality and the sentiment of the people, which was for change.” He emphasized that Congress cannot accept these results under such circumstances.

A Positive Outlook for Jammu and Kashmir

Despite the setbacks in Haryana, Ramesh acknowledged the positive outcome in Jammu and Kashmir. He remarked that voters had defeated the BJP’s “mischievous designs” to gain a majority in the region. He added, “People have given a befitting reply to those who trampled upon Jammu and Kashmir’s respect by taking away its statehood.” The NC-Congress alliance will strive to revive the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.

Modi’s Gratitude

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the voters in Haryana. He thanked them for granting a “clear majority” to the BJP for the third consecutive time. In a post on social media, he hailed the victory as “the victory of the politics of development and good governance.”

BJP’s Organizational Strength

The BJP’s success in Haryana, combined with its highest-ever seat tally in Jammu and Kashmir, could counter claims that the party is losing its support base. This victory highlights the party’s organizational efficiency and adaptability in responding to changing ground dynamics.

In his address, PM Modi congratulated BJP workers for their tireless efforts. Reports indicate that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) played a significant role in these elections. He acknowledged their dedication in serving the people and emphasized that this historic victory resulted from their hard work.
