US Encourages Pakistan to Adhere to International Law Amid SCO Summit

The United States affirmed Pakistan’s right to align with any regional groupings while emphasizing adherence to international law. The statement came on Tuesday, as Pakistan hosts the significant Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad. This summit features major players like Russia, China, India, Iran, and key Central Asian states.

During a press briefing, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted the importance of global norms. He stated, “The United States respects each country’s sovereign right to associate with groupings of its own choosing.” However, he stressed that countries must ensure their multilateral engagements uphold international law and respect the sovereignty of all nations.

Miller also addressed Pakistan’s concerns raised at the UN Security Council last week regarding nuclear proliferation threats from India. He acknowledged, “We are aware of Pakistan’s request to the UN Security Council.” He reiterated the US commitment to track and respond to proliferation threats and stated, “We will continue to work with our partners to shape international security.”

This discussion followed reports of Indian police arresting three individuals in Bihar for illegally possessing 50 grams of radioactive californium, valued at over $100 million. The incident has raised alarms about nuclear security in the region.

Tensions Between India and Canada

The press briefing also covered rising tensions between India and Canada. Allegations have surfaced regarding India’s attempts to assassinate Sikh dissidents in North America. Miller noted that Washington has shared its concerns with New Delhi. He revealed that senior US officials have held multiple meetings with Indian counterparts about these serious allegations.

When asked about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statements regarding Indian activities, Miller responded, “We have made clear that the allegations are extremely serious and need to be taken seriously.” He emphasized the importance of cooperation between India and Canada in the investigation, stating that India has chosen “an alternate path.”

Tensions escalated as Canada and India expelled each other’s diplomats following accusations against Indian diplomats of involvement in criminal activities within Canada. Reports indicate a request for India to waive immunity for six diplomats to facilitate questioning.

As the SCO summit unfolds, the international community will closely monitor how regional dynamics evolve and how countries navigate their associations while respecting international law.
