KARACHI: Street criminals gunned down a man named Farhan during a mugging incident in the SITE-Superhighway Industrial Area. He was returning home after selling his wife’s jewelry to fund his daughter’s medical treatment. This incident highlights the alarming rise in street crime in Karachi, despite recent claims from the police.
Karachi Police chief Javed Alam Odho recently stated that street crimes in the city have dropped by 50% in the first quarter of 2024. However, the reality tells a different story. Deaths due to street crimes have surpassed 100 this year alone. The stark contrast between police reports and the experiences of families like Farhan’s raises questions about the actual safety in the city.
Incident
Farhan worked for a pharmaceutical company and faced significant financial challenges due to his daughter’s illness. According to his family, he was shot three times by muggers who robbed him. His father-in-law reported that neither a case was registered nor any suspects arrested. The incident occurred on Tuesday, yet the police only instructed the family to visit the station to file a report after they arrived at the hospital.
The increasing incidents of violence highlight a grim reality for residents of Karachi. With the law enforcement agencies seemingly overwhelmed, street criminals operate with impunity. The city’s residents are left vulnerable to such heinous acts, with little recourse for justice.

Another Victim of Violence
In a separate incident, a man named Umair was shot dead near Mubarak Mosque in Karachi’s Defence area. Witnesses reported that he had been waiting for someone for about 15 to 20 minutes while speaking on the phone. Two men on a motorcycle approached and opened fire, hitting him with seven bullets. Police believe this incident stemmed from personal enmity.
Street crimes have reached alarming levels in Karachi. The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) documented over 50,000 incidents between January and August this year. This staggering figure reflects only reported cases, with many more likely going unreported. On average, Karachi experiences around 208 criminal cases daily, primarily involving the snatching of mobile phones, cars, and motorcycles.
The consequences of street crime extend beyond the loss of property. Approximately 100 individuals have lost their lives to street criminals, while nearly 500 others have sustained injuries from gunfire. The residents of Karachi are left grappling with a sense of fear and insecurity in their daily lives, as the threat of violence looms large.
