The construction of the M6 Motorway from Karachi to Sukkur is set to revolutionize transportation in Sindh. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister of Communication Aleem Khan agreed on Thursday to extend the M6 Motorway from Karachi to Sukkur via Hyderabad, rather than starting from Hyderabad, as initially planned. This decision aims to enhance connectivity, especially for port traffic, and boost economic activity in the region.
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for M6 Motorway
During a meeting at the CM House in Karachi, both leaders discussed the potential of building the motorway through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or forming a consortium involving the federal and provincial governments. This move would help pool resources and expertise, ensuring the efficient execution of the project. CM Murad Ali Shah committed to exploring the proposal and determining how the Sindh government can contribute to this crucial infrastructure development.
The M6 Motorway is designed to be a 306-kilometer long, six-lane, access-controlled highway. It is envisioned as a high-speed toll road that will facilitate safe and efficient transportation. The motorway will start in Karachi, pass through Hyderabad, and end in Sukkur, providing a critical link between the southern and northern regions of Sindh.

Addressing Delays in the M6 Project
This recent agreement follows earlier challenges with the M6 Motorway project. Initially, a PPP agreement had been signed. However, the project stalled, and the partnership was canceled due to unresolved issues. The meeting between CM Murad and Minister Aleem Khan also touched on several other key infrastructure projects. Discussions covered the upgradation of the Lyari Expressway. NOC issue of the Link Road interchange, and ongoing road construction from Gharo to Keti Bundar were addressed. Additionally, the condition of the Thatta to Keenjhar road, work on the Ghotki-Kandhkot bridge, and the pending completion of the Jamshoro-Sehwan Road were highlighted. The above-mentioned concerns are top prorities.
These projects collectively aim to improve road connectivity throughout Sindh. This will make transportation more efficient and fostering economic development.
