ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz has called on officials to expedite reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Chairing a meeting on Thursday, the prime minister emphasized that the reform process should stay on schedule. He urged FBR officials to create a “cordial and friendly” environment for taxpayers.
Shehbaz highlighted the importance of modern technology in improving taxation and revenue collection. He also instructed officials to develop a restructuring strategy for Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL). The prime minister expressed that an efficient system can make tax processes seamless and reliable for the citizens.
Tribute to Polio Workers
PM Shehbaz praised the efforts of polio workers. He acknowledged their sacrifices and commitment, and lauded the support from international partners. The prime minister reiterated his resolve to make Pakistan a polio-free country.
During an event for World Polio Day, he addressed the resurgence of polio cases in Pakistan. He pledged that the government would confront the issue with determination. Shehbaz stated, “With this commitment, we will push polio out of the country and ensure it never returns.”
The prime minister also launched a nationwide polio vaccination drive, administering drops to children to mark the initiative. He expressed appreciation for the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their continued support. He acknowledged the Saudi government’s role in the fight against polio as well.
FBR Updates Active Taxpayers’ List System
The FBR has revised the Active Taxpayer’s List (ATL) system. These changes aim to better document taxpayers and enhance transparency. Now, the ATL will be updated daily, replacing the previous weekly schedule.
This new approach will reflect tax-compliant citizens more accurately. Taxpayers who submitted their Income Tax Returns (ITR) for 2023-24 on time or within the extended deadline will be added to the ATL immediately. The FBR believes this move will facilitate late filers, ensuring they appear as active taxpayers once they fulfill their obligations. Taxpayers who file late may also be included in the ATL upon payment of a surcharge as specified under the Income Tax Ordinance, section 182A.
PM Directs Labour Attachés to Aid Skilled Workers Abroad
Prime Minister Shehbaz met with newly appointed community and labour welfare attachés. He directed them to focus on finding employment opportunities for skilled Pakistani workers abroad. He stated, “Your appointment has been made through a transparent process, and I am confident in your abilities.”
Shehbaz emphasized that the well-being of overseas Pakistanis should be a top priority. “Overseas Pakistanis, who bring billions of dollars to Pakistan, are valuable assets to our country,” he remarked, encouraging the attachés to work diligently for the welfare of the diaspora.
