ChatGPT Restored After Outage Disrupts Thousands of Users
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a popular AI tool backed by Microsoft, experienced a significant outage affecting over 19,000 users worldwide. Users faced disrupted access, with service restored for most by late Friday. However, a few users continued to face brief delays. This incident highlights the need for enhanced reliability as OpenAI’s AI-powered service rapidly expands its user base.
Service Restored Following 30-Minute Disruption
OpenAI confirmed that the platform was fully functional by 4:34 p.m. PT (0034 GMT Saturday) for most users, with full access by 5 p.m. (0100 GMT Saturday). CEO Sam Altman expressed his regrets on X (formerly Twitter), noting the outage and adding, “We are much, much better at reliability than we used to be, but clearly more work in front of us,” ending with a frown emoji. OpenAI acknowledged that while its system’s reliability has improved, the outage exposed areas that still need refinement.
Downdetector.com, a site tracking service outages, reported that the disruption began at approximately 7:13 p.m. ET (0013 GMT Saturday). During this time, more than 19,400 users reported problems, mostly involving access issues on the ChatGPT platform.
Past Outages Raise Concerns on Stability
The recent outage is part of a series of occasional disruptions impacting ChatGPT. OpenAI faced a similar problem on June 4 this year, which affected users worldwide. Although OpenAI has worked extensively to improve the platform’s stability, these occasional downtimes raise concerns as the platform continues to scale and attract a massive global user base. OpenAI’s status page confirmed both incidents, underscoring that some technical issues may persist as the platform grows.

The Impact of ChatGPT’s Global Reach and Growth
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT’s popularity has surged, drawing in 250 million weekly active users. This rapid growth reflects the widespread appeal of generative AI tools across sectors from business and education to entertainment and creative industries. As a result, the platform’s valuation skyrocketed from $14 billion in 2021 to an estimated $157 billion. OpenAI’s revenue has similarly grown, with projections indicating it will reach $3.6 billion by the end of the year.
OpenAI’s Response and Path Forward
Following the outage, OpenAI reaffirmed its commitment to addressing technical challenges to ensure a smooth user experience. Altman’s response on X highlights the platform’s focus on reliability, with OpenAI devoting more resources to resolving issues that can disrupt access for its growing user base. While short outages may occur, OpenAI aims to make these interruptions rare as part of its ongoing system improvements.
Looking Ahead: Reliability and User Expectations
With ChatGPT becoming an essential tool for millions worldwide, OpenAI faces increased pressure to minimize service disruptions. Users now depend on AI tools for various tasks, and maintaining service stability is key to meeting their needs. While OpenAI has made strides in reliability, it remains focused on refining ChatGPT’s performance to reduce the impact of any future outages.
As ChatGPT’s usage continues to rise, OpenAI’s ongoing improvements will be closely watched by its user base and industry analysts alike. The platform’s efforts to enhance stability reflect its commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality service, ensuring ChatGPT remains a dependable tool for users around the world.
