Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has strongly criticized the government’s recent internet and VPN restrictions, noting a significant disconnect between decision-makers and the realities of modern internet use. He highlighted that limitations on VPNs and internet speed impact technology’s potential in Pakistan, hindering economic growth in both tech and agriculture sectors.
Government’s Internet Policies
Bilawal expressed disappointment at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) restrictions on unregistered VPNs. He argued that such policies reflect the outdated perspectives of decision-makers who overlook the essential role of internet infrastructure and high-speed connectivity in today’s economic landscape. “Our internet speed doesn’t meet 4G standards, lagging as if it were the 90s,” he remarked, emphasizing that improved internet services are vital for national development.

Critique on Judicial Representation and Reforms
Bilawal also criticized the government’s handling of judicial appointments, citing his recent withdrawal from the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) in protest. He objected to the lack of equal representation for all provinces, arguing that Sindh had been marginalized in recent nominations. Additionally, he accused certain judges of politicizing their roles rather than upholding the Constitution, calling for judicial reforms to improve fairness and consistency.
Strained Relationship with Federal Government
Though his party supports the ruling coalition, Bilawal pointed out ongoing disagreements, particularly regarding the approval of projects like the Indus River canal expansion. This move, approved without consulting the PPP, he said, undermines the agreement made between the PPP and PML-N to collaborate on provincial development.
Roadmap for Judicial and Social Reforms
Bilawal emphasized that true reform must extend to the lower judiciary, where most Pakistanis have direct legal interactions. He encouraged the Sindh government to consult key judicial figures to create reforms that align with public needs. While he acknowledged differences with the federal government, Bilawal remains committed to supporting policies that advance fair representation and economic growth.
