Islamabad: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir addressed the growing challenges in global security. He spoke at a special session of the Margalla Dialogue 2024. The event, organized by the Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI), focused on “Pakistan’s Role in Peace and Stability.”
General Munir emphasized that Pakistan has played a crucial role in promoting peace both regionally and globally. He acknowledged that the world faces significant challenges, including the rise of violent non-state actors and the influence of state-sponsored terrorism. He pointed out that the rapid spread of misinformation and the increasing inequality, intolerance, and divisions based on religion, sect, and ethnicity have created instability worldwide.
“Freedom of expression without regulation is leading to the erosion of moral values,” said the Army Chief. He also highlighted the growing influence of non-state actors and the urgent need for comprehensive laws to prevent the destabilization of societies.
The Threat of Terrorism
During his speech, General Munir addressed the rising global threat of terrorism, particularly the “Fitna al-Khawarij” in Afghanistan. He noted that this group has become a hub for terrorist organizations and proxies worldwide. He called on the Afghan interim government to prevent the use of Afghan soil by terrorists.
In this context, General Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad, a vital part of the National Action Plan to eliminate terrorism and extremism within the country.
Border Management and Security
The Army Chief also discussed the steps taken to secure Pakistan’s western borders. He stated that a comprehensive border management regime had been implemented to prevent any cross-border terrorist activities. He reiterated Pakistan’s firm stance on combating terrorism, emphasizing the need for continued cooperation between regional nations.

India’s Role and Kashmir
General Munir criticized India’s extremist ideology, stating that it has made religious minorities unsafe abroad, particularly in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. He also condemned India’s actions in Jammu and Kashmir, describing them as a continuation of Hindutva policies.
He called for the resolution of the Kashmir issue in line with United Nations resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Support for Palestinian State
On the issue of Palestine, General Munir reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding support for a free Palestinian state. He emphasized that Pakistan had consistently called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and provided humanitarian aid to both regions.
“Pakistan has always advocated for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state,” he added.
Commitment to Global Peacekeeping
General Munir highlighted Pakistan’s contributions to global peacekeeping, noting that 235,000 Pakistanis have served in United Nations peacekeeping missions, and 181 have sacrificed their lives for international peace. He assured that Pakistan would continue its positive role in global peace efforts without participating in global conflicts.
Pakistan’s Strategic Importance
The Army Chief also spoke about Pakistan’s strategic importance due to its rich resources, young population, and unique geographical position. He noted that Pakistan’s large deposits of rare minerals, role in freelancing, and strategic seaports make it a key player in trade between Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
