ISLAMABAD: The United States urged Pakistani authorities to respect human rights and ensure the peaceful demonstration rights of PTI supporters. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the need for restraint and adherence to fundamental freedoms during a briefing on Tuesday.

“We support freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association,” Miller stated. He called on protesters to refrain from violence while urging the authorities to respect laws and human rights.

Protests and Government Response

PTI convoys from across the country are heading to Islamabad to demand the release of their founder, Imran Khan. The federal government has pledged to prevent their arrival at D-Chowk, the planned protest venue in the capital.

Authorities have placed containers and barbed wires at key entry points to block protesters. Heavy police deployments signal a readiness to use force if necessary.

The crackdown has led to clashes between PTI supporters and law enforcement. Protesters faced baton charges, tear gas, and attempts to arrest participants.

During the day’s confrontations, Punjab police reported the death of a constable at Hakla Interchange. Officials blamed “miscreants” for the incident, further escalating tensions between the government and protesters.

Court Ruling on Protests

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) previously ruled that PTI’s planned protest was unlawful. The court directed the government to maintain law and order without disrupting public life, especially during the Belarusian president’s visit to Islamabad.

PTI’s Strategy and Government’s Stance

The PTI protest, initially planned for November 24, has taken a slower approach. PTI leaders stated they were in “no hurry” to reach Islamabad. Convoys from different regions continue to mobilize despite facing resistance.

The government remains resolute in stopping the protest. Containers block key highways, and checkpoints hinder convoys. The protest has become a battle of wills between the government and the opposition.

International Concerns

The US State Department’s statement highlights international attention on Pakistan’s handling of the situation. Miller’s comments underline the global emphasis on upholding democratic values, even in times of political unrest.

The US appealed to both sides to demonstrate restraint, follow the law, and avoid escalating violence.
