Share the latest news updates

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the formation of a dedicated anti-riot force following the recent dispersal of PTI protesters in Islamabad. The move comes two days after the government used force against demonstrators demanding the release of PTI founder Imran Khan. The protest, led by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Bushra Bibi, resulted in multiple casualties, although conflicting reports exist on the exact death toll.

The PM emphasized the importance of equipping the force with modern tools and specialized training to handle future protests effectively.

Discussion on Governor’s Rule in KP

During a federal cabinet meeting, one minister suggested imposing governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The minister argued that the KP government used state resources to support protests. However, no concrete decision was made on the proposal.

The PM also highlighted the need to take legal action against those damaging public and private property. He urged officials to strengthen the prosecution system to hold violators accountable.

Tribute to Security Personnel

The prime minister lauded security personnel for their sacrifices during the protest crackdown, stating, “The entire nation pays tribute to the martyrs who defended the country’s peace.” He also directed officials to devise a comprehensive strategy to prevent similar marches.

Addressing Economic and Security Challenges

Separately, PM Shehbaz addressed the 26th National Security Workshop at the National Defence University. He linked economic stability with national security, emphasizing the government’s commitment to executing a Charter of Economy to transform Pakistan’s economic landscape.

The PM reiterated his 2018 proposal to privatize state-owned entities to save trillions of rupees, adding that all institutions are aligned on this issue.

Highlighting progress, the PM celebrated the Pakistan Stock Exchange surpassing 100,000 points, attributing it to effective teamwork and government coordination.

However, he acknowledged ongoing economic challenges, noting the country narrowly avoided default in June 2023 with the help of an IMF standby agreement. The government, he said, is preparing a homegrown economic plan to address systemic issues, including power sector circular debt and tax evasion.

Security Concerns

PM Shehbaz also addressed security concerns, citing the loss of 80,000 lives in the fight against terrorism and $130 billion in economic damage. Referring to recent violence in Parachinar, he stressed the need for unity to ensure national security.

Support for Lebanon and Malaysia

The PM welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, expressing hope for a permanent cessation of hostilities. He also extended condolences to Malaysia over the destruction caused by recent floods, reaffirming solidarity with the Malaysian government and people.
