Methane emissions, a critical factor in climate change, are being driven by specific sources within U.S. landfills. Recent research highlights landfill “work faces” as the primary contributors to these emissions. The study, conducted by Carbon Mapper, Arizona State University, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), underscores the urgent need to address methane’s environmental impact.

The Study’s Methodology
To identify methane emissions from landfills, researchers used airplanes equipped with advanced air-quality measurement tools. They surveyed 217 landfills across 17 U.S. states, flying at low altitudes to detect methane concentrations.

The study pinpointed landfill “work faces” as the primary source of methane emissions. These areas, where fresh waste is actively deposited, emitted the largest volumes of the gas. In contrast, other landfill sections showed minimal or no methane emissions.

Gas-Capturing Technologies Fall Short
Many landfills use gas-capturing technologies designed to reduce emissions. However, the study found that even landfills equipped with these systems emitted significant amounts of methane. Researchers attributed this to the size of these facilities—larger landfills produce more methane, overwhelming gas-capturing systems.
