The incident occurred in the remote Gunangar area of Chakesar tehsil, marking another blow to the region’s law enforcement amid rising terrorist activities.
Deadly Attack in Shangla
Officials reported that the checkpost was targeted with heavy weaponry, including rocket launchers and hand grenades. The assault caused significant damage to the building’s structure, leading to its walls collapsing. One constable was buried under the rubble while others sustained injuries.
Shangla district police spokesperson Umar Rehman confirmed the attack, identifying Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Hassan and Head Constable Nisar Ahmad as the martyrs. Three other constables were critically injured and immediately transported to the district headquarters hospital in Battagram with the help of locals and police officials.
A String of Recent Attacks
This marks the second attack in Shangla within three days.
The surge in violence comes after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022. Since then, attacks targeting security forces have sharply increased, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the country has reported 1,566 terrorist incidents in the past 10 months alone. Of these, 948 occurred in KP, resulting in 583 fatalities.
Government Condemns the Attack
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the terrorist attack and paid tribute to the martyred officers. Expressing grief over the loss of lives, he extended prayers for the quick recovery of the injured.
“The martyrs are our pride. We stand united with their families,” Naqvi said, emphasizing the sacrifices made by the KP police in the war against terrorism. He praised their courage and reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating militancy.
Ongoing War Against Terrorism
The incident highlights the continued vulnerability of law enforcement personnel in KP, a province bearing the brunt of terrorist resurgence. Despite relentless efforts, militants continue to pose a significant challenge, especially in remote and sensitive regions like Shangla.
The proximity of Gunangar to the Karakoram Highway and Indus River makes the area strategically important and prone to insurgent activity. Police forces remain on high alert, ensuring security for both civilians and officials.

A Call for Stronger Measures
The increasing frequency of such attacks underscores the urgent need for strengthened counter-terrorism operations and enhanced security measures in sensitive areas. Authorities have been urged to provide improved resources, intelligence support, and infrastructure to safeguard frontline personnel.
As investigations continue, the sacrifices of Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Hassan and Head Constable Nisar Ahmad remain a solemn reminder of the courage of Pakistan’s law enforcement. Their dedication in the face of such threats reflects the ongoing battle against terrorism in the region.
